Can an English speaker get by without Spanish off-the-beaten-track in the Canary Islands?
I’m planning on visiting either Fuerteventura or Tenerife & La Gomera in January 2010, for a walking holiday off the beaten track, and want to know if my lack of Spanish will present an issue in communicating with local people.
I agree with Molertolga, in that you’ll not find English spoken off the beaten track. Best advice is to invest in a phrase book (with pronunciation tips) containing key phrases. Show that you’re making an effort. Canarian natives away from the tourist areas will think it’s quite endearing.

Good luck!
