Driving in Turkey?

Going to Kalkan Turkey for a holiday, my husbands very tempted to hire a car so that we can get about independently. I understand there are plenty of taxis and water taxis there but we would still like to be able to get about and see the real Turkey on our own for a few day at least. Just wanted to ask anyone on here who lives in Turkey or has driven there just to give me some idea what driving conditions we can expect as all countries are different, other other than the obvious (driving the other side of the road etc.) Any handy tips would be most helpful as we are still undecided whether to hire a car or not, have only ever driven in the UK and Tenerife so would be grateful for some real insight into driving in Turkey, pro’s and con’s. Many thanks!

Go for it! Some of the Turkish driving leaves a lot to be desired, but that’s true of most Countries.

I would say that most of the main coastal roads are now quite decent, so if you are sticking to the main routes (airport to coast etc) you’ll be fine.

Some of the more rural routes can be pretty hair raising, but that’s all part of the fun when exploring!

I would recommend that you hire your car through a UK company or at Dalaman Airport (Holiday Autos, Hertz etc), as there could be a possibility that if you hired a car in a seaside resort you might not be insured properly.

Hope you have a great time!
