Tenerife is a Spanish island, the largest of the seven Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, and one of the most popular tourist and holiday destinations in the world. It’s not difficult to understand why – Tenerife harbours some of the sunniest and most desirable beaches in the world and cheap hotels and apartments are both widely available.

In the southern part of the island where there is often a more welcoming hotter and drier climate, tourists will find a number of well developed and well established beach resorts such as Playa de las Americas. Two of the beaches in this resort were awarded the blue flag in 1998 by the European Environmental Education Foundation (FEE). This is an award given to beaches that comply with community regulations in matters of cleanliness of coastal waters and other requisites. This stretch of the coast is perfect for water sports, such as surfing and jet-skiing.

El Barranco del Rey is the boundary between the boroughs of Adeje and Arona and there are several golden-sand beaches along this stretch of coast, like Cuevitas and Playas de Troya, which are very popular for their dry, sunny climate. There are many bars, restaurants and terraces along the pedestrian promenade that has been built along this stretch of coast.

La Caleta is a small coastal enclave in the borough of Adeje, near Playa de las Americas. Although it has a stone beach, taking a short half an hour walk to the south will lead you to some small coves of golden sand.

Playa de la Enramada is between La Caleta and Playa de las Americas. It is a quiet cove with a sandy beach. Beyond the Camisón point is Playa de las Vistas, which has been refurbished with sand from the sea bed, making it one of the best and longest beaches on the island. On all these beaches, you can hire sun beds, pedal boats and wet bikes. There are also many bars and restaurants in the neighbourhood of Playa de las Vistas, so no need to get too thirsty or hungry from all that lying in the sun!

The Granadilla coast has the island’s best beaches of fine golden sand. El Médano is a small, quiet, family holiday resort, with the longest beach in Tenerife (2 Km) and shallow seas. The constant winds in this area make the beach ideal for windsurfing.

Playa de la Tejita is a broad beach approximately one kilometre long, just south of El Medano, beyond Montana Roja. A little further south is the small El Confital black sand beach. Playa del Arenal is between Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo. It has black volcanic sand or pebbles, depending on the time of year and the tides.

One thing is for certain, there are no shortage of great beaches in Tenerife and at just a short hop from the UK, it’s little wonder that the island attracts plenty of Brits who take advantage of the many hotel deals in Tenerife that are available online, and from the high street.
